Birds of the Yucatan II /Aves de Yucatán II

The first picture in this section has an interesting story. I was just arriving at Isla Arena in the Petenes Biosphere Reserve and was walking to get to one of the fishing harbor docks early in the morning. I noticed with the binoculars that there was a large quantity of sea birds in a large dock. I immediately got my gear ready (for those interested: A Sigma 500/4.5 lens, converter Nikkor 0.4x, Nikon D100 Camera all that mounted on top of a Gitzo 1228 carbon fiber tripod fitted with Wimberley head). As I approached the birds very carefully -I knew that if they noticed me, they would get nervous and fly away in a burst of multicolored wings and feathers- I also tried to get the best angle and position to shot. Given the narrow angle of a 500 mm lens you can imagine that there were a lot more birds than those in the picture. It was a cold morning so maybe the weather was responsible for the unusual bird clumping. I have never seen anything like that again.

La primera foto que aparece en esta sección, tiene una historia interesante. Acababa de llegar a Isla Arena en la RB los Peténes y estaba caminando muy temprano rumbo al muelle de pescadores. Desde lejos noté con los binoculares que había una gran cantidad y diversidad de aves marinas en una sección del muelle. Monté mi equipo inmediatamente (para aquellos interesados en los detalles, aquí van: lente Sigma de 500 mm/4.5, con teleconvertidor 0.4x Nikkor y cámara Nikon D100, todo en un trípode Gitzo 1228 de fibra de carbono en una ball-head Wimberley). A medida que me acercaba no podía creer lo que veía por el view-finder: la mayor cantidad de aves marinas tan juntas y apretadas como jamás había visto antes. Sabia perfectamente que no podía acercarme mucho o las aves volarían inmediatamente, así que busque la mejor posición y ángulo que pude y comencé a “disparar a discreción”. Dado el poco ángulo de apertura que proporciona un lente de 500 mm, se podrán imaginar que había muchas mas aves apiñadas que las que se muestran en la foto. Era una mañana fría y quizás eso las hacía juntarse tanto. Nunca más he vuelto a ver algo parecido.
