Birds of the Yucatan I / Aves de Yucatán I

The birds of the Yucatan Peninsula are among the most varied and beautiful of Mexico. I am lucky to live here and in the winters I can get my gear at 05.00 am and be in the field by 07.00 am shooting birds as diverse as pelicans, gulls, flamingoes, and migratory passerines in the mangroves, marshes and seashores of the Petenes Biosphere Reserve (less than two hours drive from home) or hit the road and go to the Calakmul Reserve (where I used to have a little wood cabin) to spend the weekend shooting toucans, parrots and all sort of jungle birds.

I think it is very obvious in this blog that I have recently been more interested in shooting birds than any other subject. Birds are not only beautiful as well as pleasing and interesting to watch, but they are generally easily available -when compared with other animals- to the nature photographer. Bird photography is also one of the most challenging, both technically and artistically, what makes it even more interesting.

Las aves de la península de Yucatán son de las mas hermosas y diversas en México. Tengo la suerte de vivir aquí y en los inviernos, puedo tomar mi equipo fotográfico, salir a las 05.00 y estar listo para fotografiar aves tan diversas como pelícanos y gaviotas, flamencos y espátulas rosadas en los manglares de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Los Peténes (que está a 2 horas de mi casa por carretera) o salir con rumbo a la Reserva de la Biosfera de Calakmul (donde tengo una cabaña) y pasar el fin de semana fotografiando tucanes, loros, paseriformes locales y migratorios y un sin fin mas de hermosísimas aves.

Creo que es evidente en este blog, que recientemente me ha gustado mucho mas la fotografía de aves que otro tipo de fotografía. Las aves no solo son hermosas de ver e interesantes de observar, sino que también generalmente están mas fácilmente disponibles para el fotógrafo que otros tipos de animales. Las aves también representan un reto técnico y artístico que difícilmente supera algún otro tipo de fotografía y esto la hace aún más interesante.
