Research interests:

My research focuses in three main areas:

I. Wild animal health (Conservation Medicine).
Sick and dying Black Howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) was found and photographed by colleagues Dr. Griselda Escalona and Dr. Jorge Vargas in Balamkin, Campeche

II. The ecological and epidemiological consequences of biological invasions by exotic vertebrates (in particular disease spill-over & spill-back)
In 1993 a herd of more than 900 red deer (Cervus elaphus scotticus) were imported from New Zealand to Mexico for the very first time. Fifteen years later this species was present in almost every state and in almost every UMA (wildlife management unit) of the Mexican territory. I was one of the first ones to oppose to this introduction when the job to manage this herd was offered to me by certain politicians, federal government agents and academics the year before they imported the animals.

III. Deer ecology, conservation and management

In 1998, we captured and radio-collared the first (ever) Yucatan brown brocket deer in the jungles of Nuevo Becal, Calakmul, Campeche.
Recent research projects:

1. Monitoring wildlife health and emerging infectious diseases in southeastern Mexico: research program and agenda (2006-2010). -in preparation- More information on this exciting program soon!

2. Ecology and conservation of sympatric tropical deer populations in the Greater Calakmul Region, Campeche, Mexico (1996-2001). This was my major research project to date and I obtained my PhD with it.

Teaching:
In Mexico:
I was professor of Ecology, Ethology, Animal reproduction and Zoo and Wildlife Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the State of Mexico (UAEM) from 1993-1996.

I have tutored three Bachelor in Science (biology) and two DVM students. Currently, I am tutor or adviser of six MSc students at ECOSUR and INECOL, Mexico and two PhD students (ECOSUR) with their thesis on:

1. Comparative parasitology of wild and domestic ungulates in the Lacandona forest, Chiapas, Mexico (Salvador Romero, MSc candidate at ECOSUR 2003-2005. Salvador graduated in 2006 and the resulting paper is accepted in The Journal of Camparative Parasitology)

2. Relative abundance and population density of wild ungulates in the Eden Biological Station and Reserve, Quintana Roo, Mexico (Rosa Maria Gonzalez, MSc at INECOL 2003-2005. Graduated.)

3. Blood indicators of health and physiological status of the Usumacinta's river endemic white turtle (Dermatemys mawii) in Tabasco Mexico (Judith Rangel, MSc candidate at ECOSUR 2005-2006. Graduated.)

4. Health monitoring of Moreletti's crocodiles (Crocodylus morelletti) in Campeche, Mexico. (Sergio Padilla, MSc candidate at ECOSUR 2006-2007. Graduated.)
International:
I have been part of a group of instructors with Stanford University's (Stanford California, USA) Center for Conservation Biology in international courses in biodiversity management and design of conservation projects that took me several times to Guatemala, Cuba, Costa Rica, Colombia and Peru from 1996-1998. While in England, I helped teaching the courses of General Ecology and Animal Behaviour at the School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences of Durham University (2000-2003).
