Last Sunday September, 14th of 2008, as a celebration of the 198th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico, a good friend of mine, Pablo Mech, M. D. (on his Suzuki 250 cc) and I, went for a first ATV expedition on the coast of Campeche . We planned to make it from the sea turtle conservation camps of Punta Xen and Chen Kan to the fishing village of Sabancuy. It is a route of about 30-35 km of beautiful beaches, a few small dunes and mangrove forest patches. It was great and Pablo is great company as always. The Honda is awesome in the sand!
I took this chance to take the route with the GPS so that a comparison of the beaches can be made in the future with the data on the characteristics of the nesting beaches of the hawksbill turtles (click here for info on this). I will be putting maps of the route soon

Hicimos una primera salida para probar la Honda ATV. Decidimos que fuera algo "leve" ya que la máquina aún se esta aflojando y todavía hay que cuidarla. Salimos, un excelente amigo y famoso deportista de aventura campechano, Dr. Pablo Mech (en su Suzuki 250 cc) el domingo 14 de septiembre a las 6 am con rumbo a Champotón. La idea fue hacer el recorrido desde el Campamento tortuguero de Punta Xen hasta el poblado de Sabancuy, por toda la costa de Campeche. Son aproximadamente 30-35 kilómetros de playa, algunas pocas dunas y pequeñas áreas de manglar que se tienen que rodear por carretera. La carretera federal Champotón-Ciudad del Carmen va paralela a esta ruta. Llegamos a las 7.45 am, bajamos las motos y a darle.
Aproveche el viaje para tomar la ruta con el GPS y eventualmente comparar los datos fisiográficos de la playa con el estudio de tesis de mis estudiante Adriana Guzmán sobre las caracteristicas de los sitios de anidación de la tortuga carey en Campeche (ver aquí). Con este viaje y los datos de Adriana ya tenemos más de 70 km de playa georeferenciada (la mitad de ellos con datos fisiográficos al azar) donde anida esta especie de tortuga marína en peligro de extinción.
Aquí van unas fotos de los bellos lugares por los que pasamos, en particular una ensenada muy hermosa con una arena blanca y fina y un manchón de manglar muy bonito.

Wow! Look at this place! No wonder Campeche is called "the hidden treasure of Mexico" I hope it will continue like that (without much development) for a long time.
